Recorded as early as 1837 in Pennsylvania where it grows wild! When ripe, citrus flavored delicious golden fruits encased in a papery husk that turns brown at maturity fall to the ground. Many people save the seeds to start them early in the spring so that they can be started early and get better production, like with tomatoes and tomatillos. Otherwise, they will reseed themselves with a few left on the ground. Stores 3-4 weeks after falling from the plant while still in the husk. Cousin of the tomatillo. Likes hot weather and prefers less water and no extra fertilizer (tolerate, even likes, poorer soil). This fruit can be used in many different recipes that state “gooseberry.” Quite incredible and very much enjoyed! Remember to plant two to get germination and fruit production. 65 to 70 days from transplant. |
